Government, health and wet industry professionals gather to hear latest findings on world aquatic health
Australia’s biggest Pool and Spa Trade Show, SPLASH!, hosted the first Australian World Aquatic Health Conference (WAHC) on 17 – 18th July 2014 on the Gold Coast, Queensland.
Over 70 delegates from around Australia attended to hear world-renowned experts in science, industry and regulation speak on how to provide a safer, healthier aquatic experience. Delegates were also given presentations from the day, allowing them to take learnings back to their workplace and share with colleagues.
The event attracted a high calibre of attendees, with participating delegates from city councils, NSW and QLD government and department of health, Swim Australia, Poolwerx, Royal Life Saving Society QLD, Waterwise, YMCA and many more.
Standout speakers included Michele Hlavsa of the US CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program, Ernest Blatchley of Purdue University, Llew Withers and Rachael Poon from Department of Health, Alex Antoniou from the NSPF and Rob Stowell from Learning Australia.
The event was sponsored by Australian Innovative Systems (AIS), Swimming Pool Retail Association Australia (SPRAA) and BioLab, and supported by the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF). Thomas Lachochki, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of the NSPF, thought the new Australian format was executed well, saying “it was an honor to engage with leaders in Australia and a pleasure to visit your beautiful country. It was great to learn the latest science and to see circles of people talking and networking about science that is relevant for industry and policy around the world. Learning, science, and networking that’s what the World Aquatic Health Conference is all about!”
Alex Antoniou, Director of Educational Programs for the NSPF, added “Australians and Americans share so much in common, in this instance at the World Aquatic Health Conference, it was coming together to work on creating safer swimming pools and improving public health and safety. It has been a joy to be a part of the evolution of the swimming pool and spa standards of Australia and I am excited at the direction it is taking. When you get together with other passionate individuals who share a common goal, you can’t help but get caught up in the “movement.” We are truly honored to be part of the growth in Australia. Thank you SPLASH! for providing the venue for the exchange of ideas.”
The success of the event has seen planning begin for the next World Aquatic Health Conference, to be held in 2016 alongside the next SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show. To be kept updated on the latest developments, call 1300 789 845 or email Interpoint Events, the event organisers.
